Student Sucess

John Marshall students receive guidance and support in a number of ways, some of which are described below.

Scholarship & Academic Success

Academic Support & Advising

Need help understanding IRAC? Case briefing? Legal analysis? How to read cases correctly? Improve your legal writing? Writing essay answers or answering multiple choice? Assistant Dean Luma can help with that. She has taught several legal writing and bar preparation courses. She also can provide academic advising and discuss which classes you should/need to take. If you’d like to schedule an appointment please visit jmlstluma.as.me.

Diversity Course—Coming Spring 2020!

UIC John Marshall Law School is planning to include a diversity course in the Spring 2020 JD curriculum. The course will emphasize critical thinking around the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The course will also examine how diversity, equity, and inclusion influence American jurisprudence and the practice of law.

Study & Resource Room

Room S526 has resources and supplements for several 1L, 2L, and 3L courses. Students can check out books during the semester, midterms, or finals. Also, Room S526 will be a space for students to study individually or in study groups.

Programs

Dinner with the Deans

An opportunity for students to connect with the Law School Deans over dinner or other meals. Students can stop by throughout the event to grab a bite eat and chat. There are three or four dates each fall and spring semester, and the food typically reflects dishes from different cultures and heritages. In the past, Dinner with Deans has featured Spanish, Asian, and Middle Eastern dishes, as well as other cuisines. Look out for Dinner with the Deans announcements in the upcoming semesters!

Diversity Week

Every Spring semester the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion holds a week of events focusing on elevating thought, dialogue, and active engagement around diversity, equity, and inclusion. Many of our student groups create the content and host these events. Diversity Week activities are for ALL members of the law school community. The conversations and new perspectives from this week are a part of how the UIC John Marshall Law School community can connect and learn from each other.

If you'd like to submit a discussion topic, suggest a panel, etc., for Diversity Week, please email diversity@jmls.edu.

Legal Bingo & Jeopardy

Test your legal analysis prowess. We're shifting studying from an individual approach into the game arena for these two events. Create teams, and we're keeping score. For 1Ls and 2Ls during the fall and spring semester.

Missed Conversations

Have you ever wanted to speak out on an idea, but for some reason don't? Missed Conversations offers the law school community an open and safe space to ask the hard questions such as:

We value your opinion! The Missed Conversation Series will be held multiple times during the fall and spring semesters.

Talent Night

Looking to put those years of piano/flute/oboe lessons to use? Have the singing voice of a thousand angels? Have a group number that can’t be beat? Join our Talent Show!

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is seeking students looking to showcase their talent. If you are interested in performing, please fill out a brief survey that will distributed to students prior to the talent show.

Student Belonging & Wellness

Name Coach

Ever had difficulty pronouncing someone's name? Do you have a name that others find difficult to pronounce? We have a tool for that! NameCoach is a tool available in Moodle that allows students to record the pronunciation of their name. Faculty and staff will be able to access your name recording to avoid messy mispronunciations. It's also easier to build personal connections when you can say someone's name correctly. The correct pronunciation of your name will also come in handy during the graduation ceremony! Record now on Moodle.

If you have questions please about NameCoach, please email diversity@jmls.edu.
For questions related to Moodle, please email Chris Bevard at cbevard@jmls.edu.
